Campus as a Living Lab (CLL) : Alpha Technologies

On Wednesday September 25th, 2013, the ECE department and ECESS are honoured to have Victor Goncalves from Alpha Technologies speak as part of the Campus as a Living Lab (CLL) series. The event will be from 12PM to 1PM in MCLD 418.

Innovative Design for Integrating Distributed Power Modules

Victor Goncalves, from Alpha Technologies Ltd, will present a case study on an innovative design for integrating distributed power modules. Alpha has teamed up with Corvus Energy to develop an Energy Management System (EMS) for a Network of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and Li-Ion batteries to demonstrate that stored energy can be used to reduce energy flow from BC Hydro during peak demand periods. This project is part of the continuing UBC Living Lab initiative for demonstrating industry-university collaboration.

Victor Goncalves is the Director of Research & Advanced Development at Alpha Technologies. He graduated from UBC with a B.A.Sc. in Electrical Engineering in 1987. Victor worked for a short time at a Cable TV company before joining Alpha and started as a power supply design engineer. In his current position, Victor heads the Research and Advanced Development team. The team is developing modern, digitally controlled, high energy density, switching power supplies. This technology is designed into hardened outdoor power cabinet systems that provide the backup power needs of today’s fast changing wireless communication networks, outdoor security systems and emerging Smart Grid networks and devices. In 2013, Victor received a Certificate of Fellowship from Engineers Canada for his exceptional contributions to the engineering profession for his work with APEGBC. He is a founding member of UBC’s Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Industry Advisory Council and served on the review committee for the most recent ECE external review. During his career, Victor has been very involved with development programs for new engineers and has maintained a close association with students and faculty.
